From the Court, to the Track

By Shea Healy A talent show winner, a runner, and a blogger. This triple threat always has another talent up his sleeve. Sean Mason, 19, of Bridgewater is the 2011 Cardinal Spellman High School talent show champ. He can make catchy remixes to songs like Empire State of Mind by Jay Z to win the show, and also run his best 5k in 15:56. As an avid basketball fan, his blog ‘Daily Dribble’ is popular in the sports world and takes up majority of his time. It may seem like Mason is living the dream as an aspiring sports journalist, writing his basketball blog, but he would rather be on the court. Basketball is his favorite sport to play, watch, and write about. Following a big move from his hometown Anahiem, California to Bridgewater, Massachusetts, basketball was the one thing that Mason still knew. Going into freshman year, trying out for the basketball team was something to look forward to. Not allowed to play football because of his mom’s rules, Mason chose cross-country. After running his first season he said he fell in love with it. Making the basketball team seemed like it was in close reach for Mason. One week after cross-country, Mason was in the hospital after finishing his first couple of months at a new high school. It turned out that Mason has an irregularly slow heart rate. This condition was found after he had collapsed, waking up in the hospital. After three months of no answers, his condition was finally diagnosed, he received medicine and everything was under control. He said this bump in the road made him stick with running and give up basketball. Although he doesn’t still play, he surrounds himself with sports other than running, “I’m obsessed with sports, I know a lot about them. I actually have my own basketball blog called Daily Dribble,” Mason said. In October of 2013, Mason started the Daily Dribble a public blog on WordPress.com. It is fitting that the English and Communication major writes on the side. He’d rather be writing from his home state California but for now Massachusetts will do, “I want to go into sports broadcasting and journalism. I will go anywhere I can get a job but ideally I would like to go back to California,” Mason said. Mason’s life is built around sports. He was the high school football sports announcer, and coached the middle school baseball team at North Middle School in Brockton. After not running cross-country this fall, he misses it. “I ran a tough mudder this summer. It was so hard, I was sore for days after the race,” Mason said. Still actively competing in races, Mason is trying out for the track team this spring at Stonehill College after transferring from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin because his mom needed him closer to home.
